Queensland Country Bank Stadium is Townsville’s new 25,000-capacity stadium which officially opened in February 2020. The centrally-located, best-purpose, multi-purpose venue is the new home of NRL club, North Queensland Cowboys. The first event held at the venue was the Elton John concert on 29 February.

The new stadium was constructed on an abandoned industrial site at Monkey Island, just south of the city’s centre. It will be connected with more populated west bank of Ross Creek with three existing bridges and a two new pedestrian bridges. Cox Architecture’s concept was selected for implementation. The signature feature is a semi-open roof resembling the leaf of a Pandanus tree which covers 80% of spectators and will withstand cyclonic winds if necessary.

Double-tiered stands for 25,000 are expandable to 30,000 in the future with the initial layout including a very modest north end as the stadium opens towards the city centre northwards. This allows fans to be able to see the city while inside the stadium. A separate grassed terrace outside the venue and beautifully landscaped surroundings are expected to become a new meeting point on a more frequent basis, also offering great view of the city.

During construction, the venue was known as North Queensland Stadium, however its inaugural naming-rights sponsor was announced in December 2019, with the new stadium to be known as Queensland Country Bank Stadium in a six-year deal.
